A serious crash on the Pali Highway has resulted in a fatal traffic incident involving a teenage driver, prompting road closures, emergency response activity, and an ongoing police investigation.
According to reports from authorities, the crash occurred early Thursday morning when a vehicle traveling along the highway lost control, struck a barrier, and went over the edge of the roadway into a ravine. Emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene following multiple 911 calls reporting a severe collision and fire.
The Honolulu Police Department confirmed that the driver, a 16-year-old female, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials stated that the vehicle became airborne after hitting a concrete barrier before falling approximately 50 feet into a steep ravine, where it sustained heavy impact damage and caught fire.
Firefighters and paramedics worked at the scene to recover the victim and secure the area. Authorities said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, and speed appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether other factors such as road conditions or mechanical issues played a role.
The incident forced the closure of Kailua-bound lanes for several hours as emergency crews conducted recovery operations and investigators documented the scene. Traffic congestion quickly built up along surrounding routes as drivers were diverted away from the highway.
The Pali Highway, part of Hawaii Route 61, is a major commuter route connecting Honolulu to windward communities such as Kailua and Kāneʻohe. Due to its steep terrain and narrow sections, it is considered one of the more challenging drives on the island, particularly during wet or high-traffic conditions.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. The Honolulu Police Department’s Vehicular Homicide Section is reviewing evidence, including roadway markings, vehicle damage, and potential witness statements, to reconstruct the events leading up to the fatal collision.
Officials have urged motorists to exercise caution when traveling through mountainous routes, emphasizing the importance of seatbelt use, safe speeds, and heightened awareness on steep or winding roads.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
